For consumers

Look beyond the shine.

Visible cleanliness matters, but a reliable hygiene picture also depends on practices, records and responsible oversight that diners may not see.

01

Visible signals

Clean service areas, protected food, good staff hygiene and pest-free surroundings are useful first cues.

02

Context matters

A date, scope and issuing body help you understand what a rating or claim actually represents.

03

Ask better questions

Businesses should be able to explain their hygiene practices without vague or misleading claims.

04

Report concerns

For a serious issue, preserve relevant order details and contact the restaurant, platform or appropriate food-safety authority.

Reading a hygiene claim

Check whether it identifies who assessed the establishment, when the assessment happened, what was evaluated and whether the result belongs to an official scheme or a private programme. A logo or star alone is not enough context.

Food can still carry risk even where a rating exists. Ratings are snapshots of defined conditions, not a guarantee that illness can never occur.
